1974 DATSUN 710
#93 DAVE FRELLSEN

This Datsun 710 is the 1974 and 1975 SCCA B Sedan National Championship-winning car. Driven by Dave Frellsen, it dominated the B Sedan class from 1974 through 1977, earning pole position in three of four years at the SCCA National Runoffs. Among its global variants—the Datsun 710, Nissan Violet, and Datsun 160J—this factory-backed 710 stands as the winningest competition chassis.

In 1974, the Datsun Competition Department supplied this 710 to Dave Frellsen as part of a factory-supported racing program. Frellsen had just won the 1973 SCCA B Sedan National Championship in his Datsun 510, and Datsun aimed to put the all-new 710 on the SCCA road racing map.

Initially, Frellsen was hesitant about the 710's live axle rear suspension. However, despite its solid rear axle, the 710 quickly proved to be a dominant force. It boasted superior aerodynamics and a wider track than the more popular 510. Bob Sharp himself once remarked that he didn’t think he could even get a draft off the 710.

From 1974 to 1977, Frellsen was nearly unbeatable, frequently outperforming fully factory-backed teams, including Bob Sharp Racing. He achieved success at numerous tracks, including Road Atlanta, Elkhart Lake, Blackhawk Farms, Trois-Rivières, Mid-Ohio, Nelson Ledges, Indianapolis Raceway Park, Grattan (Michigan), and Mid-America Raceway.

In January 1978, the car was sold to Kent Barber on the West Coast, and later, in 1983, to David Blum. Under Blum's ownership, it competed in the SCCA GT2 and GT3 classes within the San Francisco Region. Blum even entered it in an IMSA GTU race at Sears Point International Raceway. Notably, multi-time SCCA National Champion Doug Peterson of Comptech Racing drove the car in four races during Blum’s tenure.

Dennis Golden later acquired the car and brought it to the 1984 SCCA National Runoffs. He qualified again in 1985 but did not compete. Eventually, the 710 came into the possession of Allan Robbins, a dedicated Bob Sharp Racing Datsun Z-car racer and collector. Robbins sold it to his crew chief, Shawn Pritchard, in the 1990s. Pritchard and the current custodian, Glenn Chiou, became friends over the years, and in 2025, Pritchard entrusted Chiou to undertake and complete a full restoration of this historic racing car.
